Throat problems can occur for various reasons. Dry throat often becomes the main indicator of inflammatory processes. The appearance of this symptom may not be associated with any pathologies, so treatment can only be prescribed after determining the cause of this phenomenon.

Causes of dryness in the throat

Very dry throatThe feeling of severe lack of moisture in the mouth occurs because of bacterial and viral infections, allergic reactions, acute pharyngitis, smoking, staying in a room with dry air (a frequent occurrence in the winter).

Additional causes of dryness in a throat are:

  • influenza or cold
  • sinusitis
  • sinusitis
  • fracture of the nasal septum.

Dryness in the throat: associated symptoms

Unpleasant feelings may be associated with violation of the salivary glands. Depending on the cause, such a condition can be both temporary and permanent.

Very often this symptom is combined with other symptoms. It is accompanied by cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, tearing, changing the voice timbre.

It may cause fever, general weakness, drowsiness, and muscle pain.

Irritated dry throat begins to bother so that there are problems with swallowing food.

The reason for the development of this symptom is the destruction of mucous membranes. This condition often occurs in people over 50 years of age. In this case, drugs based on vegetable oils are used for local therapy.

With the development of pharyngitis, dryness and sore throat may also appear.

The inflammatory process in most cases is caused by a viral infection. The sensation of a foreign body in the larynx, pain and itching occur against the background of prolonged psycho-emotional overload. Depressive disorders cause smooth muscle spasm and drying of the mucous membranes. Symptoms of the dry throat are temporary and disappear after a few hours.

An agonizing cough and pain in the mouth are noted for colds and infections of the upper respiratory tract. The same signs can appear at an allergy. Only a doctor can diagnose correctly. Treatment consists of taking antibacterial or antihistamine drugs. A change in timbre, dryness and burning in the throat are signs of laryngitis.

Most often, the disease develops after influenza and ARVI. Its aggravation promotes smoking, the use of cold dishes. The pain is observed when swallowing food, dry cough later becomes wet.

A lack of moisture in the pharynx and nose can occur with prolonged use of certain medications. If this condition is combined with nasal discharge, it is an initial stage of a cold. Air with low humidity strongly dries mucous membranes, contributes to the development of nasal bleeding.

Drying and burning can also occur in violation of the functions of the thyroid gland. It is responsible for the secretion of hormones that affect certain parts of the brain. Pain and a feeling of heaviness in the neck or throat can occur with hypothyroidism.

Irritation of the pharynx area, accompanied by the appearance of white patina, is one of the symptoms of tonsillitis. The disease leads to redness and swelling of the tonsils, the appearance of caseous traffic jams and pain when swallowing. Antiviral and antibacterial agents are used for the treatment.

The lack of moisture in the larynx mainly at night is associated with difficulty breathing through the nose. This condition is typical for people who constantly have signs of apnea.

Removal of the glands, like any other surgical procedure, often leads to undesirable consequences. The infection can affect nearby tissues, which causes acute pharyngitis.

The feeling of dry throat after eating can be due to abnormalities in the digestive system.

An ulcer or gastritis in the stomach can be detected if there are concomitant symptoms – pain in the abdomen, a specific coating on the tongue, loss of appetite, vomiting, and a bitter taste. With pancreatitis, pain in the left side of the abdomen, flatulence, diarrhea.

The main cause of dryness in the throat in children is to stay in a room with dry air. Especially often this symptom appears in winter. The children’s body quickly responds to changes in moisture levels, because mucous membranes are not fully formed. If this symptom is combined with fever, nasal congestion and pain, you should consult a doctor.

Dry throat: diagnostics of possible diseases

The survey begins with the examination and interviewing of the patient – collecting history. Information about previous diseases significantly facilitate diagnosis.

There is also the possibility that foreign body penetration or hypothermia has occurred. Some long-term current pathologies of the endocrine system and blood also contribute to the development of inflammation in the pharynx.

Severe thirst and dry mouth can be signs of diabetes. Hypothyroidism leads to difficulties with swallowing, puffiness and overdrying of the tongue.

Diagnosis of diseases of the pharynx and larynx includes pharyngoscopy, taking smears from the nasopharynx, determination of blood sugar levels, examination of the thyroid gland and stomach. In addition, consultation of an ENT specialist, a gastroenterologist, a neurologist and often an endocrinologist is required.

How to get rid of the dryness in the throat?

The method of treatment is selected depending on the cause of this symptom. If dry throat is a consequence of an infectious disease, antibacterial, antiviral or antifungal drugs are prescribed.

If the cause of unpleasant sensations is dehydration of the body, it is necessary to observe a special drinking regimen. Moisturizing nasopharynx contributes to the use of saline. It is dripped into the nose and used to rinse the pharynx. At night, you can take any vegetable oil – from sea buckthorn, flax, olives.

To increase the humidity in the room, special devices are used. You can replace them with water tanks placed on radiators.

To eliminate the drying out of the larynx area, use:

  • laser therapy – increases the moisture in the nasopharynx and strengthens the immune system;
  • mineral treatment – spraying of special preparations on the mucous membranes using ultrasound devices;
  • Ozonotherapy – physiotherapy procedure aimed at strengthening the immune system, restoring blood circulation and enriching tissues with nutrients.

The following folk remedies can be used for dehydration of the oral cavity:

  • carrot juice with honey;
  • radish juice with honey;
  • fresh cabbage juice.

The use of pomegranate juice is recommended. For rinsing recommend using a decoction of pomegranate peel. It is useful to eat cherries, drink compotes and fruit drinks from this berry.

The effectiveness of the treatment of the discussed symptom increases with the observance of the following rules: the use of increased amounts of drinking water, regular brushing of teeth, the use of mouthwash, the rejection of the use of salty and spicy foods.
